Itsukushima Jinja: School Trip

More school kids roaming around Itsukushima… I always like to grab photos when people are posing, especially since I just can’t get enough of that peace sign. You can see the floating torii in the background.
Itsukushima jinja is a world heritage site on Hiroshima prefecture’s Miyajima island. The shrine and it’s gate are regarded as one of Japan’s great views because of its large torii which stands over 16 meters tall. The shrines dates back to the days of Taira Kiyomori and features the oldest Noh stage in Japan. Another amazing feature of the shrine is that it was built over water. The appearance changes as the tide goes rises and falls.
Miyajima is a sacred island a few minutes from the mainland which can be accessed by ferry. It is a short distance from Hiroshima and Iwakuni and makes for an excellent day trip. The highlight of the islands, besides the roaming deer and monkeys, is Itsukushima jinja. The large torii there is one of Japan’s three greatest views–I totally agree with this although I have never been to Amanohashidate. It also includes other temples, shrines, nature, and of course shopping. Highly recommended.
Kids on field trip

I decided one sunny afternoon to visit Madras’ Fort St. George. Turns out, a school in Trichy district wanted to do the same. These kids were visiting the Fort Museum (An awesome place – more details about it soon) for a field trip, and seeing my camera, wanted me to take a picture of them. Here it is…

Question by rollindays: Fellow Americans: why are Asian kids closer to their parents than American kids?
When they’re kids, they resent the overprotection. But when they grow up, they realize it was for the best. They also like to see their families more than once a year (like our kids do) after college. They don’t want their parents to live in old shelter homes, & would love them to stay at their place. They aren’t affected by ‘invasion of privacy’ like our kids are. I’ve seen Asian kids change their lives drastically to accommodate their old parents in their lives. People leave jobs to look after their parents.
