Somehow I identified a lot with this kid: both of us were focused on our games and did not give a damn about the rain.

It’s well into the first day of the new year, and these Amish kids were playing outside their school with some light snow flurries blowing around out there.

New Year’s Eve presented an excellent opportunity to test my shiny new Nikon SB-400 flash and Nikkor f/1.8G AF-S DX lens using our friends’ kid (and his mom) as a model. This is my first stab at portrait and family photography, so comments are greatly appreciated.

This kid is Moeen, living in Tabl village, a big village located at northern part of Qeshm Island, and is the nearest to Harra Marine Forest.
After an interesting traverse of Harra Forests, we asked our taxi driver for some bakery which we can buy something for our lunch.
He introduced us with his family in a near village (Tabl), and asked one of them to show us the bakery.
Mother of this kid, persistently asked us to went to her home and be her guests for lunch, while we didn’t even know her and vice versa!
But when we found how kind and inviting she is, we accepted her invitation and went there.
While they were poor, but we felt welcome and comfortable there, because of their warm hospitality.
After lunch, me and Somayeh went out to play with kids, and make them happy.
I’ll upload some more photos of them later

Happy New Year

Part holiday card, part “death star” homage, this year’s collection of kid pics was initially inspired by zero g’s popular "Star Wars" collage.
I started out messing around with some of last year’s pics and pulling groups of them together. I didn’t want the resolution to be limiting and before long had stitched together about 150 images in a huge 6×6 mosaic using about active 75 layers. (No offense intended to the friends/family diminished and/or skewed near the edges of the sphere.)
The ultraviolet image of the Sun comes from the TRACE Observatory. The Earth was downloaded from NASA’s spectacular Blue Marble mosaic. The sphere effect results from a simple Adobe CS3/photoshop filter.

Question by JW: How to politely request no kids or dogs at a party?
I’m throwing a party at my house soon and I was wondering how to approach the issue of kids and dogs. I don’t want to deal with kids and I don’t want dogs jumping up on guests, but parents and owners alike seem to not recognize the annoyance their little knee chompers are capable of.
Are there any common polite and irrefutable reasons you might give to not want either around? Thanks.

Simply say: “No kids or dogs allowed, we’re watching rated R films tonight”
